The Galápagos giant tortoise, Chelonoidis nigra, is endemic to the Galápagos Islands, 1000 km due west of Ecuador. This image is of a dome-shelled tortoise, they have short necks perfect for grazing on the ground, vs their cousins the saddle-back tortoises who stretch up to eat cacti.

This particular tortoise was photographed on my visit to the Galápagos Islands. I stood before it with humility, gratitude, and absolute wonder. And took more photographs than anyone ever wants to see!
